'L. speciosum var. Rubrum' - Oriental Species Lily

Flower Description: (Wild lily Native of Japan) In was the inclusion of L. speciosum var. rubrum into the delicate and difficult to grow “wild” oriental lilies of Japan such as L. alexandrae, L. nobilissimum, L. rubellum, L. japonicum , and most importantly L. auratum and it’s variant L. auratum var. platyphyllum, by the late Jan Degraaff, founder of Oregon Bulb Farms in the 1940’s, that made it possible for us to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the Oriental Hybrids in our gardens today. The stamina and resilience of L. speciosum var. rubrum gave way to the indestructible ‘Black Beauty’ as well.
Terrific for the late garden, these rose pink blooms are gently recurved and carry light pink to white edges along with distinct raised papillae in the nectary centers. Very light fragrance due to the later bloom period as temperatures begin to cool in the Maritime climates, but a more pronounced scent in warmer climates. 3 to 4 Feet. Late August / Early September in the Pacific Northwest. Earlier in the Midwest, South, and East.
NOTE: For those who have been waiting for the return of L. speciosum var. ‘Uchida’, we expect to have it up to numbers again to be offered in 2011. Photo inset is that of the cloned selection ‘Uchida’.
