(Species / Wild Lily)
This native of Lativa is found on the dolomite hills near the mouth of the Daugava River. Grown and photographed in Switzerland by Pontus Walleten in 2006/2007, Pontus reported not being overly impressed with this species. A highly experienced grower, he said it "was not easy to grow and after 3 years following bloom, it was totally gone. The seed does germinate immediately after sowing and are not delayed as in the type. In nature it does inhabit very limy soils which could be key to long term survival in the garden. Pontus has an excellent book titled 'The Lily Species and their bulbs' and he can be contacted by email at pontus.wallsten@bluewin.ch for more information. He also offers some rare species lilies in limited quantities that are shipped from his nursery in Switzerland.
