Flower Description: One of the darkest garnet red Orientals we offer, this had only been offered as a cut flower in quality floral shops for many years. Because of its intense color, it is not for heavier shade areas, 'Sumatra' needs a brightly lit site (not baking sun) for sturdier stems and so that its color really shines. In weather over 90 degrees F. for us, the flowers are like the first photo, in light shade and cooler weather, they are a true black-red and the speckles are not as visible. Expect differing shades of color from year to year, depending on summertime weather. In all cases, plant with lighter colored lilies for contrast.
The last inset photo is of two flowers side by side. 'Sumatra' is on the left, 'Rio Negro' on the right side, both are similar in color and have chocolate colored nectaries, but 'Sumatra' tends to larger sized flower, that are more strongly outfacing and star-shaped. 'Rio Negro has less ruffles to the petals and they tend to slightly curl back, but it tends to have more flowers per stem. 3 to 4 feet. Mid-August flowering. Fragrant.
