'Bellingham Star' - Orienpet Hybrid Lily
In November of 2008, we listed for the first time 'Bellingham Star' on our web site as the variety LF-1 and it sold out in less than two weeks. The first selection we made from the breeding work of the late LeVern Freimann of Bellingham, Washington, the breeder of 'LeVern Friemann, Scheherazade, and others, this is still one of our all time favorites.
First introduced in our fall 1997 catalog, we realized that there was still a great deal of breeding potential left in this lily and removed it from our catalog listings. One thing a breeder does not do is release their breeding gene pool to competitors until after all breeding potential has been exhausted. When you have a good thing, you want to be at least 3 to 4 breeding generations ahead of Holland.
'Bellingham Star' is a time-test hybrid of the Aurelian Hybrid 'Thurderbolt' bred with the Tetraploid Oriental hybrid 'Rachael Pappo'. It produces lovely 6-inch cantaloupe-orange flowers that age to gold with ivory at the petal tips. There is a burgundy-red blush on the tepal reverses. The thick, heavily-textured blooms have an apple-green nectary star and cinnamon colored raised papillae. Very drought tolerant and heat resistant. Flowering in mid July, and normally reaches about 5 feet once settled in. LeVern typically had stems nearly 8 feet in height in his home garden. Not only an important variety for breeding, this is one great garden lily as well.
Rare, Limited Supply - Approx. 35 Bulbs. Bulbs are flowering size having produced 2 or more flowers summer of 2022.
Photo Insert is that of Hybridizer LeVern Friemann with 'Bellingham Star' in 1996.
Bulb Size - Our standard for bulbs of this Orienpet Hybrid Lily Bulb cultivar ranges from Premium-size (16/18 cm) to Exhibition-size (over 20 cm). Click here for details.
Classification: Orienpet Hybrid Lily Bulb (USDA Zones 5-9, colder climates w/winter mulch.)
