Classification: Orienpet Hybrid Lily Bulb (USDA Zones 5-9, colder climates w/winter mulch.)
Stock # 9052 - 'Jameson' - Orienpet Hybrid Lily
We followed ‘Cragganmore’ with ‘Jameson’ simply for the reason this is another lily named by the breeder for what must be his favorite beverage. This breeder though either he has a keener palate or a larger pocket book, as Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve goes for $269.95 per bottle. Voted “Best Irish Blended Whiskey” at the 2009 World Whiskey Awards though we are guessing that the honor of being the best adds significantly to the price.
Now on to ‘Jameson’ the lily. Though it is a bit early to award this magnificent hybrid “best in the world honors” as its namesake, it does have all the makings. Though the parentage and breeding lines that produced this marvel are not published, we can make an educated guess based on over 30 years of experience and its similarity to lilies we have known in the past. Nearly 10 years ago, the ‘White Henryi’ hybrids ‘Whistlin Dixie’, ‘Snowbells’, Czar Nicholas’, and ‘Bandito’ along with seedlings bred by our friend, the late Don Egger, all went back to Holland when Cebecco Lilies, an R & D Company in Oregon was dissolved. ‘Jameson’ bears a strong resemblance to these earlier hybrids as well as great, great, great, grandma ‘White Henryi’ and appears as a refinement of Don’s earlier work. We have found ‘Jameson’ to be extremely rugged in the garden, and when grown alongside the others, stands tall and strong. “Best in the world”? Well not yet, but ‘White Henryi’ was one of the first lilies inducted into the “Lily Hall of Fame” and ‘Jameson’ has all the makings of being even better. The one true test, is time.
Like ‘White Henryi’ which was bred and released in 1947 by the late Leslie Woodriff who we knew well, ‘Jameson’ has the same white base color and golden throat and lots of little cinnamon-colored speckles. The flowers do not recurve quite as much as ‘White Henryi’ and are a bit more upfacing. Photo inset is 'White Henryi'
It is estimated that there are only 1000 bottles of ‘Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve’ being offered in the US this year. While there are not nearly this many bulbs available of the lily, it is much better priced, and unlike Irish whiskey, this lily will not leave you feeling bad in the morning, but feeling eager to go out into the garden and view its beauty day after day. 4 to 5 Feet. July.
Note:If you are not feeling tipsy yet after sampling ‘Cragganmore’ and ‘Jameson’, why not check the spicy bouquet of ‘Kurni’ in the next listing. While we don’t recommend mixing Scotch, Irish Whiskey, and Wine in one setting at the table but, these lilies certainly mix well in the garden, and, you won’t need a designated driver.
Bulb Size - Our standard for bulbs of this lily cultivar ranges from Premium-sizeª (16/18 cm) to Exhibition-sizeª (over 20 cm). Click here for details.
