Our minimum size for daylilies is a healthy 3-fan or 3-fan division with balanced root systems, depending on the age of the plant. Less expensive varieties or a harvest overage usually results in more fans per division, but 4 fans is the average size.
Cultivars which produce extremely large fans, such as ‘Hyperion Supreme’, may be graded by root system only with two or three huge fans and petite varieties such as 'Louise Manelis' may be 5 or 6 fans per division. Tall growing cultivars, including Tetraploids, may look more robust to the eye (appear larger) than similarly priced Diploids, but plant size depends greatly on the cultivar, when it was last transplanted, and the season of delivery.
We are generous with the size of plants we provide, but if you order a wide range of cultivars, expect a variety in fan/root size.
We have periods of frozen ground alternating with heavy rain throughout April and many plants are not accessible until the weather dries. The first plants to be dug from our field in spring are gauged on the size of the roots - not the thickness or height of the foliage, which may be smaller than plants sent during summer. This is very desirable for gardens in northern areas. Daylilies sent from warm climates March - April will have spent much of their stored energy growing leaves, which must then be trimmed before planting.
Our propagation field is just beginning to wake up in April, a good thing for you, because your plants will be dug before the flowering scapes have begun to form, which increases the chance of first year bloom in newly transplanted daylilies.
Plants sent throughout summer are pre-trimmed for transplanting.
