No, Lilium bulbs are perfectly hardy throughout most of North America when planted in the garden. Asiatic bulbs do well in all climates, regardless of winter lows; Orientals will do fine without mulch, down to minus 20 degrees F., Trumpet & Aurelian varieties perfer it a bit warmer. Colder climates without a reliable snow cover during winter should mulch Oriental and Trumpet bulbs for at least the first winter. If winter temperatures rarely go below 40 degrees F., you may need to lift the bulbs in October and refrigerate them 4 - 6 weeks to provide an artificial winter. Over winter, potted lilies need special attention; refer to your Cultural Guide packed in the shipping carton.
