Evergreens and Semi-evergreens do best in U.S.D.A. Zones 6-9; leaves tend to grow whenever temperatures begin to warm during winter or early spring. In Zones 9 and 10, Evergreen varieties have nice foliage throughout winter. Elsewhere, Evergreens retain attractive leaves down to 20* F. At 0* F., top growth will brown and wither like Dormants, but roots and growth buds are undamaged. With reliable snow cover or winter mulching, Evergreens grow and bloom well year after year even in severe climates. Our garden is located farther north than the state of Maine, yet we grow more than 150 Evergreen cultivars subjected to fierce wind, wild freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rainfall, and absolutely no mulch or protective snow cover.
